What does a Calculation Engineer do?

Updated: Apr 23, 2023

Structural engineers are tasked with designing and constructing buildings or structures that are safe and can withstand the loads to which they will be subjected.

In general, a civil engineer's duties consist of defining the structural elements of the architectural project, preparing the documents for the building permit (submitted to the Dirección de Obras Municipales), reports, technical specifications for the shell, construction drawings, detailed design, and organizing the work and managing the team. If the client is planning a new construction or an existing property, it is important to seek the advice of a calculation engineer. This person will advise you on the realization of your project, provide on-site consultation, plan your construction costs and much more.

Then...

What does a Calculation Engineer do?

Civil engineers or structural engineers are highly skilled professionals who are responsible for ensuring that the structures we use in our daily lives, such as bridges and buildings, are safe and stable and do not collapse under possible loads such as earthquakes, wind or snow (depending on the type of structure, there are other possible loads). They are responsible for applying technical and regulatory knowledge to optimally define building materials in various shapes and geometries, and to design structures that will withstand the normal stresses of use and the contingency loads described above.

As specialists in structural calculations, we at Ingek work closely with our clients to understand the functionality of their projects and to find a safe, technically constructible solution that is designed to optimize their resources. In general, the process of structural design of a building can be divided into three phases: Load Analysis, Structural Analysis and Final Design.

Depending on the purpose of the building, national or international building standards, codes and norms may be used to determine the seismic weight of a building and the snow, wind and earthquake loads on structures. Once the loads acting on the structure are known, they are analyzed in detail to determine the effects of all these loads on the individual elements that make up the structure. Civil engineers usually use specialized software to analyze the different types of structures. It is always advisable to check the validity of the software results by applying the knowledge gained from the basic structural analysis formulas. The forces and stresses from the structural analysis software can be used to design the major structural elements, including the floor system, columns and/or columns, roofs, foundations, and other building components.

As a structural engineer, occupant safety is my top priority. When it comes to buildings or infrastructure that we use every day, the consequences of a collapse can be catastrophic. For this reason, civil engineers use safety factors in design to account for uncertainties in the definition of loads, the quality of materials, or errors in construction.
